GUIDELINES ANDRULEBOOK   Course of Fire Book

The MountedRulebookemphasizes overall SASS requirements such as clothing and aliases, as well as “The Spirit of the Game”; and, also addresses subjects such as:

Firearms used
Horses
Saddles and tack
Target and equipment
Stage design
Timing
Scoring
Penalties
Safety
Rider Classification system
Team Events

THE FOLLOWING WILL BRIEFLY TOUCH ON EACH SUBJECT

Horses – Any horse or mule in healthy condition may be used in mounted competition; including all breeds, registered or unregistered.

Saddles and tack – Leather saddle and tack must be used – no nylon or other synthetic material with the exception of bell boots, splint boots, etc.

Targets and equipment – Targets are balloons; usually inflated to approximately 6” diameter normally mounted on 1” PVC pipe in a traffic cone or other support.

Stage design – Stage design is only limited by your imagination; there are literally hundreds of courses that can be set up. *Safety is a priority.

Timing – Timing is usually done with a laser timer. Two very popular models are made by Pegasus and Farm-Tek; although hand timers and flaggers are utilized well in many new clubs.

Penalties – are listed in the Mounted Rule Book. Efforts are made to keep the penalties to a minimum for the enjoyment of all.

Safety – As in any SASS event, safety is foremost and precedes all other considerations in stage design, arena conditions, etc. Every contestant is a safety officer.

Rider Classification – SASS has 4 Divisions – Men, Ladies, Seniors, Juniors; within each division are five classes; 1,2,3,4, & 5. All new contestants start in their respective division and class 1; then work their way up through the classes as they win class awards.

Team events – are not a required event at any SASS Mounted shoot; but, when used can be a combination of 2,3, or even 4 riders; the make up based on classification and imagination. For instance a two person team might be a combination of 7 or 6, ie.; class #5 + #2 = 7; or, class #5 + #1 = 6, etc.

Arenas – Again let safety and imagination be your guide. The standard arena is 150’ x 300’ of pipe construction. Arenas can also be of ribbon or rope construction; or, no arena at all! Bearing in mind SAFETY ! Not all riders have the same skill level; so, if you cross a stream for example, have an alternate route that might take a little longer, yet will maintain safety, etc.
